The Bear Hotel

Evergreen Federal Bank’s Bear Hotel is a one-of-a-kind artwork museum that showcases Evergreen’s community projects. In addition, it serves as a community asset providing meeting facilities for local nonprofits.

The Bear Hotel received its name during the production of Evergreen’s most popular art project called “BearFest.” Through BearFest 182 fiberglass bears created by 85 artists have been displayed in downtown Grants Pass. Nearly half of the bears created have been auctioned to raise over $250,000 for local nonprofits. When not on the streets during the summer season, the bears hibernate at the Bear Hotel as part of Evergreen’s permanent art collection.

The Historic Rogue Theatre

In 1938, the year the Rogue first opened, the theatre was a beacon of the American Spirit. In its heyday, the Rogue offered Rogue Valley residents a place to escape from the daily struggle of life during the depression, a place to experience the wonders of the latest cinema technology and a place for the community to come together – for first dates, birthdays and community celebrations.

Today, the Theatre is still a special place in the hearts and minds of Rogue Valley citizens; special to both longtime residents and newcomers alike because it stands as a proud symbol of Southern Oregon’s history, serves as a powerful catalyst for downtown economic revitalization and provides a venue for a diverse array of arts and cultural events that celebrate the human spirit, bringing people of all ages together to be entertained and inspired.

The Schmidt House

In 1948, a group of citizens concerned with keeping the history of the Applegate Trail and the Rogue Valley alive founded the Josephine County Historical Society. Interest in establishing a Josephine County Historical Society was renewed in 1959, Oregon’s Centennial year. Then on August 15, 1960, in the historic Masonic Hall in Kerby, the first annual meeting was held. In 1997, the Research Library was settled into a relocated house donated by The Ken Roberts Company and renovated with generous help from the community.

Tours are offered of the Schmidt House, an historical house with a rich history and few changes made since 1910.

Downtown Walking Tours are also offered that will take you around to historical locations where you will hear stories of life in Grants Pass through the years.
