10 Reasons to Love Southern Oregon

Just to Name a Few...

Every region on Earth is unique.

Every place has its own special characteristics, from the people to the culture to the landscape itself. Residents of Southern Oregon in particular know this to be true. We have our own way of life, our own lifestyle, and at times, it seems, even our own language. There’s a certain je ne sai quoi that defines what it’s like to live in a region full of abundance, adventure, and culture all its own.

If you are new to the area or thinking about calling this place home, here are 10 reasons why you will love living here:

1. Fun on the Water
Water is everywhere in Southern Oregon. The Rogue River, a 215 mile long beauty that empties into the Pacific Ocean, provides thousands with excellent rafting runs, fishing spots, jet boat excursions and, for those lucky enough to have riverfront property, a sensational backyard.

The famous Crater Lake, around an hour’s drive from many Southern Oregon cities, formed 7,700 years ago and is a great place to visit year round. Hiking in the summer, snowshoeing in the winter, and enjoying the great outdoors any season are why so many flock to this geological wonder.

2. Wine Country
Southern Oregon’s Mediterranean climate is perfect for growing grapes, which is why so many vineyards dot the mountainsides and there’s a winery around every corner. Take a tour and get a taste of the local flavor with a dizzying selection of white, red, and rosè wines all poured from the heart of the valley. You can also head to nearly any grocery store in the area to find an assortment of fruity fermentations fresh from a local vineyard.

3. Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Every year, thousands flock to the beautiful town of Ashland to experience great culture, exceptional local talent, and a wonderful night out at the theatre during the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. It’s southern Oregon’s own mini Broadway, and the plays are phenomenal. With a rotating lineup that generally runs from February to October or November, there’s something for everyone. They even have a good old fashioned outdoor theatre for an authentic old world experience.

4. Organic and Farm Fresh Produce
We don’t just grow grapes around here. The climate is also excellent for producing a wide variety of fruits and veggies like apples, pears, berries, carrots, lettuce, and oh so much more. Come take a look at the bounty yourself at the local farmers markets that pop up in Southern Oregon’s cities weekly. There aren’t many places left in the country where you can get locally and organically produced goods on a regular basis.

5. Every Season in a Day
The sign in downtown Grants Pass says it all; It’s the Climate! Wake up to a softly lit morning, watch a gentle mist of rain trickle down and release all the wonderful earthy smells from the ground, then bask in the sunlight that comes streaming back once the clouds have rolled away. You can experience every season in a day here.

6. Hiking/Outdoor Living
If you have a passion for outdoor activities, are always on the search for the best hiking trail, or never go anywhere without your mountain bike, you’ve come to the right place. The great outdoors have never been better, and we have every kind of terrain imaginable. Go skiing on Mt. Ashland, hike up Table Rock, snowshoe around Crater Lake, and do it all without ever leaving the state.

7. The People
Oregonians in general are a friendly bunch. We take pride in our locally produced foods, excellent breweries, great scenery and laid back lifestyle. And we’re more than happy to share it with anyone who wants a taste of the Oregon life!

8. Breweries
This isn’t just a southern Oregon thing. The whole state in general is crazy about creating an amalgamation of intriguing and unique flavors in the many breweries located all over the area. Many restaurants, in fact, will have their own house brew. Not into beer? The hard cider scene is just as strong. After all, an apple a day keeps the doctor away!

9. Folk Music
For a relatively small community, we have an amazing number of great musicians that play in the local restaurants and bars. There’s always some kind of event going on to celebrate the enormous talent hiding within everyday people. Where else can you find so much support for as yet undiscovered artists?

10. The Slow Life
It’s a commonly known fact that Oregon is where Californians go to retire or get away from the fast paced city life. Here, we aren’t in a hurry. We stop and smell the roses and greet our neighbors. We savor everyday moments, enjoy the little things, and marvel at how wonderful it is to be alive. Oregon is the place to be if you really want to be. It’s never too late to start living, so why not start here?
